Reducing your risk of HPV infection is possible with simple steps and precautions. Here's what you can do:

  1. Get Vaccinated: The most effective way to prevent HPV infection is by getting vaccinated. HPV vaccines are safe and highly effective at protecting against the most common types of HPV that cause cervical cancer and genital warts. Vaccination is recommended for both boys and girls starting around age 11 or 12, but it can be given as early as age 9 and up to age 26 for females and age 21 for males who haven't been vaccinated before.

  2. Practice Safe Sex: Using condoms consistently and correctly during sexual activity can reduce the risk of HPV transmission, although they may not provide complete protection since HPV can be spread through skin-to-skin contact in the genital area. Limiting the number of sexual partners can also lower your risk of exposure to HPV.

  3. Avoid High-Risk Behaviors: Engaging in risky sexual behaviors, such as having multiple sexual partners or engaging in unprotected sex, increases the likelihood of HPV infection. Being mindful of your sexual health and making informed decisions can help reduce your risk.

  4. Communicate with Your Partner: Open and honest communication with your sexual partner(s) about sexual history, HPV vaccination status, and STI testing can help protect both partners from HPV and other sexually transmitted infections. Encourage your partner to get vaccinated if they haven't already.

  5. Regular Screening: For individuals with a cervix, routine cervical cancer screening with Pap smears or HPV tests can detect abnormal changes in the cervix caused by HPV infection. Early detection and treatment of these abnormalities can prevent the development of cervical cancer.

  6. Avoid Smoking: Smoking weakens the immune system and increases the risk of HPV-related cancers, including cervical cancer. Quitting smoking can reduce your risk of HPV infection and other health problems.

By taking these preventive measures, you can lower your risk of HPV infection and protect your sexual health. Vaccination, safe sex practices, open communication, regular screening, and healthy lifestyle choices all play a role in reducing the spread of HPV and preventing associated health complications.
