The age at which women should start getting mammograms can vary based on different guidelines and individual risk factors. However, there are some general recommendations from major health organizations:

1. **American Cancer Society (ACS):** The ACS recommends that women with an average risk of breast cancer should start having yearly mammograms at age 45. At age 55, they can switch to mammograms every two years or continue with yearly screening. Women should have the option to start screening with mammograms as early as age 40, depending on their preferences and discussions with their healthcare provider.

2. **U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF):** The USPSTF recommends biennial (every two years) mammography screening for women aged 50 to 74 with average risk. They also state that the decision to start regular, biennial screening mammography before the age of 50 should be an individual one and take patient context into account.

It's important to note that these recommendations are for women with average risk. Women with a higher risk of breast cancer, such as those with a family history or certain genetic mutations, may need to start screening earlier and may require additional or different types of screening.

The decision to start mammography screening should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, taking into account an individual's risk factors, preferences, and overall health. Regular breast self-exams and clinical breast exams are also part of comprehensive breast health. Women are encouraged to discuss their individual risk factors and screening options with their healthcare providers to make informed decisions about when to start mammograms and how often to have them.
