Caregiver’s challenges in cancer care (A Role Underestimated in Indian context?)
As a caregiver, taking care of someone with cancer can be an overwhelming and challenging experience. Caregivers play a crucial role in providing emotional, physical, and practical support to cancer patients. However, their role is often underestimated in the Indian context. In a panel discussion at The Cancer Conclave 2023, moderated by Mr. Mohammad Rizwan, panelists discussed the challenges that caregivers face and the need for recognition of their role in cancer care.
Ms. Shirley Menon, a healthcare professional, talked about the need for recognition and appreciation of caregivers in the Indian context. She emphasised the importance of acknowledging the hard work and dedication that caregivers put into caring for cancer patients. She stressed the need for support groups and counseling services for caregivers to help them cope with the challenges of caregiving.
Mr. Sanjeev Sharma, a cancer patient advocate, spoke about the financial challenges that caregivers face in providing cancer care. He highlighted the high cost of cancer treatment in India and the lack of insurance coverage for many cancer patients. He stressed the need for financial support and assistance for caregivers to be able to provide the best possible care to their loved ones.
Mr. Bighneshwar Birendra, a cancer survivor, shared his experience of her wife taking care of him during his cancer treatment. He highlighted the emotional and mental toll that caregiving can have on an individual, along with the physical demands of caring for a loved one. He emphasized the importance of having a support system and seeking help when needed.
The panel discussion highlighted the importance of recognizing the role of caregivers in cancer care and providing them with the support and assistance they need. Caregivers play a crucial role in the journey of cancer patients and need to be acknowledged and appreciated for their hard work and dedication.
